From April 24 to 30, part of the management team of the Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de Castelló (EASD Castelló) carried out an international mobility to Chengdu (China) as part of the Erasmus+ 2024-1-ES01-KA171-HED-000235077 project. This academic and training experience took place at the School of Design of Southwest Jiaotong University, the host institution with which a valuable cultural and pedagogical exchange was established.
The mobility included the delivery of an international workshop for art and design students. Entitled Universal Language: Visual Creation on Ceramic Surfaces, the Master’s degree lecturers, Lorena Cuenca Ramón and David Marqués Serra, conducted a three-day workshop focused on image transfer on ceramic surfaces as a medium for artistic expression. The workshop adopted a practical and reflective approach, aiming to foster visual storytelling and material experimentation through participatory and playful methodologies.
The workshop content combined theoretical insights, analysis of contemporary references, and creative exercises focused on the relationship between form, image and discourse. Notably, since the mobility coincided with World Book Day (April 23), the chosen thematic axis was the imagery of Don Quixote, a universal symbol of Spanish literature that served to articulate a visual dialogue between cultures.
The project culminated in the creation of personal ceramic pieces, resulting from the integration of technique, narrative content, and formal exploration.
In parallel with the workshop, an institutional job-shadowing programme was carried out by EASD Castelló’s management team. The objective was to gain first-hand knowledge of the pedagogical and organisational structure of a leading art and design university in Asia.
During the stay, the team attended classes and workshops, held meetings with faculty and research teams, and took part in seminars and academic presentations. Cultural and educational visits organised by the host institution also offered contextual insight into the region’s teaching practices and socio-cultural environment.
The mobility to China represented a unique opportunity for academic and cultural exchange, strengthening the relationship between both institutions. It also opened up new possibilities for future collaboration within the Erasmus+ programme, reinforcing EASD Castelló’s commitment to an open, global, and constantly evolving education
