The Reflejos Marinos proposal, managed by student Ana Perez (@play_cube_) was a finalist along with the proposal The Terrible Ideas Network from Parsons The New School for Design and awarded at the International Biodesign Summit 2024 with the Science Sandbox for Public Engagement award at MoMA in New York on June 14, 2024.
This initiative, integrated into the BIOmatrix: Weaving Sustainability project, not only addresses the impact of biotechnology on our lives, but also seeks public understanding of the interaction between biology and technology, and how we can use that connection to address environmental challenges and promote sustainability in our Mediterranean Sea.
In this way, «Marine Reflections» invites family audiences to question environmental reality and raise awareness about the importance of the Mediterranean Sea, allowing children and adults to think about innovative solutions inspired by nature, using recycled, recovered or natural materials.
40 highly prestigious Universities participated in the contest, with our school deserving of the Science Sandbox for Public Engagement award. This award is given to the team whose project best explores the multitude of impacts that biotechnology can have on society. The projects should amplify public debate about the desirable and undesirable futures of biotechnology. Students must engage the public with projects that challenge cultural norms around human identity, social relationships, and ultimately, humanity’s place in the living world.
